1. Koenigsegg Agera R
Top speed: 273 mph
0-62 mph: 3 seconds
The latest design from the Swedish mind of Christian von Koenigsegg will -- according to preliminary documents from Koenigsegg -- top the fastest Veyron by 7 mph.
2. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
Top Speed: 267 mph
0-60 mph: n/a
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport set a record for production cars July 2010 at the company's test track. The cars that people can buy, though, have their top speed limited to a mere 258 mph, to save the tires, they say.
3. SSC Ultimate Aero
Top Speed: 257 mph
0-60 mph: 2.8 seconds
One of the fastest cars on the planet isn't made in Italy -- it's not even made in Europe. It's made in Eastern Washington state with a massive 1287 hp from a V8 engine, if you can believe it.
4. Bugatti Veyron
Top speed: 253 mph
0-60 mph: 2.5 seconds
Well, this should surprise exactly no one: the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 tops the list of fastest cars in the world. And at $2 million, it's up there on the list of world's most expensive cars, too.
5. Koenigsegg CCXR
Top speed: 250-plus mph
0-62 mph: 3.1 seconds
The Koenigsegg CCX does fine on its own, with 806 hp, but the CCXR can guzzle ethanol, which ups its output to 1018 hp. E85, a blend of 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline, has a higher octane rating and greater cooling capacity, delivering faster times with the same exhaust temperature.
6. Koenigsegg CCR
Top speed: 241 mph
0-60 mph: n/a
This is the car that ripped the fastest production car title from the legendary McLaren F1's hands. Only 14 CCR models were built between 2004 and 2006, making it as rare as it was fast.
7. McLaren F1
Top speed: 231 mph
0-60 mph: 3.2
The McLaren F1 climbs out of the 1990s to make a go at the "Greatest Supercar of All Time" title. Only 65 street legal cars were produced, making it one of the rarest, too.
8. Pagani Huayra
Top speed: 230 mph
0-62 mph: TBD
The replacement for the Pagani Zonda holds its own right out of the gate, only one mile an hour behind the McLaren F1, which was built nearly 20 years before.
9. Ferrari FXX
Top speed: 227 mph
0-62 mph: 2.8 seconds
The FXX was a track-only supercar -- and the Ferrari test track only, at that. Only a couple dozen were built and sold, and they were all kept at the factory in Maranello between workouts.
10. Gumpert Apollo Sport
Top speed: 224 mph
0-62 mph: 3.0 seconds
This has been one of the fastest cars on the Nurburgring, at Hockenheim, and on the Top Gear test track as driven by The Stig.
