Guided Tour of the Lamborghini Reventon

By , About.com Guide

Lamborghini S.p.A.
If Fighter Jets Were Cars:
The Lamborghini Reventon was inspired by fighter jets inside and out, from its hi-tech in-dash display to the greenish, militaristic Grey Barra paint. The Reventon is even the only Lamborghini with a G-force meter -- a necessary gauge in a car with a 0 to 62 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph. The car's sharp, aerodynamic angles were designed entirely in-house at Lamborghini HQ in Sant'Agata, Bolognese, Italy. And, like Lambos that have come before, the Reventon is named for a famous Spanish fighting bull.
A Powerful Powerplant:
The Lamborghini Reventon's V12 engine is the same one found in the Mucielago LP640, but it's been tweaked to deliver an additional 10 hp, for a total of 650 hp. The 487 lb-ft of torque delivers nearly instant forward thrust to the e-gear transmission, which Lamborghini claims shifts faster than even the most expert driver. Permanent all-wheel drive delivers powers to all the tires for maximum efficiency in transferring energy from the gas pedal to the pavement. Even the rims are functional: the turbine design works to cool the ceramic disk brakes.
If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body ...:
The Reventon is immediately identifiable as a Lamborghini, with its low-slung stature, wide wheelbase, and sharply creased angles. But the designers as the Centro Stile took every angle a bit further by taking cues from modern fighter jets. The pronounced air intakes at the nose of the car don't work exactly like those found on jets, but they do allow for increased airflow to the uprated 12-cylinder engine. Like the Murcielago, the body is a carbon fiber composite, and the rear mid-mounted engine can be seen through a clear glass cover.
In the Cockpit:
The interior of the Reventon is a cockpit cocktail of Alcantara, carbon fiber, aluminum, and leather. The fighter-jet analogy of the design is carried through into the milled aluminum dash encased in carbon fiber, which houses three TFT LCD screens with two display modes. One features standard circular speedometer and tachometer displays, plus the G-Force meter, while the other represents the information in bars and graphs. The G-Force meter itself displays longitudinal and transverse on a 3-D grid, similar to instruments found in jets and Formula 1 cars.
Want One? Good Luck.:
There were only 20 of Lamborghini Reventons built in 2008, and nine of those were shipped to the United States, each at a price of one million euros (about $1.5 million, depending on the exchange rate). A sales rep at Lamborghini Houston said four of the cars had come into the country through their dealership on the way to private buyers. One sale fell through, making it the only brand-new Lamborghini Reventon in the country still for sale. The asking price for such a rarity? $1.8 million.
The Reventon Roadster:
In fall 2009, the Lamborghini Reventon Roadster made its limited-edition run, with fewer than 20 examples of the droptop supercar to be built. The V12 in the roadster puts out 670 hp, which means a top speed of 205 mph and a 0-62 mph time of 3.4 seconds. Not too shabby. The body is the same size, shape, and design as the coupe, with pop-up roll bars behind the seats. The cost of such an exclusive beast: 1.1 million euros, which translates to about a million and a half U.S. dollars.
