Porsche has what it calls a "seven-year cadence" for its models, which means that every seven years, each model gets a complete revamp (or, if it's run its course, the model could be retired). The 911 has been around for decades, and while it's not going anywhere, it was time for a refresh. The base models naturally got the new treatment first for the 2012 model year. For the record, the most current architecture is internally coded the 991; the previous version was known as the 997. But don't worry -- it's all the 911.
Every single surface of the newest 911 was reworked, and the engine was given more power and greater fuel efficiency, including auto stop/start technology. This 911 stands lower and wider, for better stability and aerodynamics, and an extra inch of legroom has been squeezed into the driver's seat.
