Euro-Spec Mercedes Sports Car Named for Stirling Moss
Mercedes-Benz and McLaren have teamed up yet again to build a limited-edition super sports car, the SLR Sterling Moss. Only 75 examples of the open-topped model will be built beginning in June, with a pricetag set at 750,000 euros (just over $1 million U.S.).
How open-topped is it, you ask? Very. In homage to the M-B race cars of Sir Stirling's day in the 1950s, the car has neither roof nor windshield, just two little air deflectors to keep driver and passenger out of the direct line of the wind. That wind will be passing over the cockpit at a good clip, too. The SLR Stirling Moss does 0-62 in 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 217 mph. Numbers like these come from the car's 650-hp V8 engine.
The SLR Stirling Moss marks the end of Mercedes' collaboration with McLaren, and thus the end of the SLR line. The company says the car is a thank you to its 75 most loyal SLR customers. They are the only people who will be able to buy this car.
